If I am to be completely honest, the call from my doctor’s office about my blood work didn’t really surprise me. In the last year, I’ve gained 20 pounds. More than 90% of my meals have been obtained at restaurants, many of which have menu boards and drive through windows. Combine that with the fact that my gym ID has grown a thin layer of dust and I guess it was time for a bit of a wake-up call: my lifestyle is a detriment to my health.

So, the facts: both my blood pressure and my cholesterol are high.

I’ve struggled with blood pressure issues since the birth of my youngest. Last year, the blood pressure was high enough that my physician prescribed medication. His words to me were “It isn’t fair to your heart to have to work so hard.” I am thankful that my doctor is so vigilant. I’ve discovered, though, that the medication has to be actually filled and taken for it to be effective.

My doctor and I had a frank discussion about my weight, and he suggested I cut back on the carbs a bit, especially pasta and potatoes, and increase my protein intake a bit. I can do that, though I love bread….but when I was at my thinnest in the past, I did a lot of that by having lots of eggs, yogurt, fish and lean beef. For a week, I was great.

Then came the cholesterol call. I had anticipated, due to my drive through eating habits while traveling, a somewhat elevated cholesterol. I just hadn’t anticipated it being quite so high. I have an appointment for a session with my doctor’s nutritionist, but over the phone she told me to start watching what I eat closely, including meat as well as eggs and dairy. In fact, she said I should consume no more than two egg yolks per week.

For anyone who travels, please tell me how it is possible to consume protein for breakfast without eggs? I had already cut out all breakfast meats because they are all high in calories, but eggs? I’m sorry, but the egg beaters just don’t taste the same….and while I try for egg whites, in true reality, it’s a chore to find a spot For anyone who knows me well, knows that eggs and dairy are like…the staples of my diet. A lot of it boils down to food.

Hello There
